Elementary (6 to 9 years old)
At the elementary level of Montessori education, learning moves from the immediate and practical to the universal. There is a strong emphasis on science, world culture, history and geography at the elementary level.
The basic curriculum is presented through a series of Great Lessons - stories that describe the emergence of the universe, of life,
of humanity and of civilization.
|
These stories of the unfolding of our world are told not only from the current scientific point of view, but from the points of viewof cultures around world and throughout history. They are designed to invite further exploration - provoking new questions that can lead to individual or small group projects.
The basic needs of life also serve as a point of departure for studying all plants, animals and human cultures.
Reading and writing is woven throughout the classroom environment. In the language area, since the basics of writing and reading have been mastered by most, the emphasis shifts to spelling and grammar, which elementary aged children have great enthusiasm for.
Although the children at the elementary level remain directors of their own educational adventures, there is greater accountability than in Early Childhood.
Children plan their work weekly and document all their work in journals. They meet individually with their teacher regularly to ensure that they are working at the goals they have set.
Elementary aged children must attend full day, from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM, five days per week.
